INTERVENTION PROGRAMS

Discovery Center Program

It is our goal at Heartland Christian School to help every student achieve all that God intends for their lives. Our desire is that every child would be successful in the classroom as well as outside the classroom.   In order to assist them to meet with success, we offer some special services.

The Discovery program has been established by the National Institute of Learning Disabilities (NILD) in Norfolk, Virginia.  The goal of the program is to help children with learning difficulties that have experienced academic frustration and/or failure in the classroom setting.  These children have average to above-average intelligence but are not able to learn by traditional classroom instruction because of perceptual difficulties.

Discovery students have one-on-one educational therapy sessions in their deficit areas two times a week.  Each session lasts about 80 minutes and is outside the classroom setting.  The remainder of the student’s schedule is spent in the regular classroom situation.

The cost of the program is $375.00 per year in addition to the regular tuition which includes a testing fee.

Reading Intervention Program

The Reading Intervention program at Heartland is focused on meeting the specific, individual literacy needs of each student in the school. In order to do this, children in elementary are screened three times a year using the DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) Assessment. Using this data and information from service plans and IEPs, students are placed in the program.

Some students work individually with the Intervention Specialist, and some students work in small groups with the Intervention Specialist. These meeting times are weekly, and they are scheduled with the classroom teacher so that students do not miss any essential class time. After students have been placed, the Intervention Specialist then uses a series of assessments to tailor a plan specifically for each child.

The Orton Gillingham program dominantly guides skill work focused on phonics and its application in reading. Work on comprehension and language skills is also incorporated. This special attention allows every student to grow in their literacy skills and meet their full, God-given potential in the classroom.

Speech Services

The goal of the Speech Department at Heartland Christian School is to identify and provide services for children who are in need of development of their speech and language skills.  All kindergarten and first grade students and students who are new to the school are screened to determine if there is a need for further evaluation.  With the parent’s permission, a student is evaluated and services are provided.

Therapy is provided in the areas of sound awareness and sound production, language comprehension, expressive language, and fluency.  Some of the students who receive services are on service plans or IEP’s, but this is not a requirement for a student to receive speech/language services.  Services are provided during school hours, and teachers are consulted when determining a child’s therapy time.

ENRICHMENT PROGRAM

GOAL
The goal of our Gifted Program is to enable students to excel in education by providing tools that will stimulate and motivate students to higher levels of thinking. We want to increase the students’ overall academic and intellectual strengths. In order to accomplish this, the Enrichment Program is offered to second through fifth grade students who show exceptional ability in a particular subject area.

ACTIVITIES
Subject areas rotate quarterly and include Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science content. During their assigned quarter(s), the students meet with the Enrichment teacher once a week for 30-40 minutes. They work in collaborative groups, with a partner, or individually in open-ended projects. The content coordinates with their academic curriculum although is offered at a more challenging and creative level. Through this process, it is our goal that students will think outside of the box and be challenged to reach their full, God-given potential.

THEATRE ARTS & DRAMA

Believing that participation in drama and theater production is an important part of developing a well-rounded educational experience, Heartland Christian School presents a quality theater program. Each year we produce a middle school play and a high school play (occasionally two), providing opportunities for actors, stage crew, make-up artistry, and technological production (lights and sound). Most of our middle school plays have been student directed, providing yet another avenue for personal growth and experience.

HEARTLAND THEATRICAL SOCIETY
As a way to further involve and reward students who are involved in theater, students may gain membership in the Heartland Theatrical Society. Points are earned by participation in plays, watching plays, and taking our Drama course. The point system can bring members to earn a letter in Theater and subsequent pins.

MUSIC PROGRAM

Heartland offers many opportunities to experience God’s gift of music. Our philosophy is that God made us with the ability to create music and instructs us to do so through His Word with instruments and our voices. We offer elementary music classes twice a week, junior high concert band and concert choir, and high school choir and band opportunities. There is also opportunity for students to lead their peers in worship at weekly chapel services by participating in junior high or high school praise teams.

LUNCH PROGRAM

Our food program includes hot meals that are prepared daily. Whole meals, main items, salads can be ordered daily. On special days each month we currently have a Pizza Hut Day, Arby’s Day, That's A Wrap Day and a Chick Fil A Day . There are also a variety of snacks, flavored milks, orange juice and ice cream to choose from.

Students are also welcome to bring a sack lunch from home. Microwaves are available in the dining commons to reheat food items. A lunch room aide is always available to assist students.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

NHS is a nationwide organization that recognizes outstanding high school students.

“The purpose of this organization shall be to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools.”

Seniors, juniors and sophomores at HCS are eligible for consideration by the faculty committee into the society if they have a 3.5 GPA and demonstrate outstanding performance in scholarship, leadership, service, and character.
